The LARGEST inner City Farm in Europe: Despite the many changes to the area, Mudchute's Open Space has been preserved as an oasis of wild and natural beauty in an urban environment. The work involved in retaining the 31 acres of Open Space as a major leisure and recreation resource for local people requires a great deal of careful planning and physical input and this has been achieved over the years, solely by the efforts of committed volunteers. The park is now reaping the benefits of the extensive work that has been carried out over the years, the vast numbers of trees that have been planted are now forming natural screens against the concrete backgrounds. The small woods, copses and hedgerows which have been developed are now habitats for a variety of butterflies and several species of birds, including the common sparrow, which is now rarely seen in London. jan Hewlett of the London Ecology Unit has been several months preparing a full report on the Mudchute Open Space and has already identified its environmental importance, particularly in a world that needs more and more protection from the effects of pollution. Mudchute has recently become a partner in the Millennium Green Project, established through SRB Funds and aimed at improving the environment for the benefit of local people. The farm houses a wide variety of farmyard animals for people of all ages to enjoy. In addition to the goats, Mudchute also has sheep, pigs, horses, cows, ducks, geese and dogs.
The llamas will happily keep you company if you wish to picnic in Mudchute’s surrounding parklands.
