The Darwin Centre is a major new development at the Natural History Museum. It provides world-class storage facilities for precious collections, new laboratories, and access behind the scenes for visitors.
Phase Two (Botany and Entomology) is scheduled to open in 2007. Central to the Darwin Centre project is the need to safeguard the Museum's valuable collections - one of the most internationally important records of natural history in existence. The 22 million specimens now housed in Phase One are known as the 'spirit collection' after the industrial methylated spirit in which they are stored. In 1768 Captain Cook set sail on his first expedition in the Endeavour. This was the first British voyage to have a group of natural scientists on board. Cook was accompanied by Dr Daniel Solander, who had joined the British Museum in 1763, and by the famous naturalist Sir Joseph Banks. They returned with 'a complete and most superb collection of all the natural as well as artificial curiosities which have been found in the expedition to the South Seas.' Joseph Banks collected over 500 fish specimens during this trip, but this was only the first of many gifts to the Museum from the numerous voyages then taking place. Cook himself is said to have given the Museum the first kangaroo ever seen in Europe. By the beginning of the nineteenth century the collections had grown at such a rate that the Museums Zoology and Entomology collections contained more than 140,000 specimens. The Keeper, Dr George Shaw, took it upon himself to keep the collections down by resorting to annual bonfires, or burying specimens in the gardens! By now the British Museum was desperately overcrowded. In 1857 Professor Richard Owen, superintendent of the natural history departments of the British Museum, submitted a report about the lack of space for his collections. In 1861 he produced a report detailing the space requirements for a brand new, separate, natural history museum.
His proposals were accepted, and Sir Alfred Waterhouses designs for the site in South Kensington were eventually built. In 1882 the collections began moving from Bloomsbury to South Kensington.
