A small intimate museum in which we show you, in pictures, words and objects, the three thousand year history of Wimbledon. The staff you'll meet there are friendly local people who are proud of our history and will gladly help you in any way they can. Prehistoric People lived and hunted on Wimbledon Common. Many of their flint arrowheads and other tools have been found. Some of those on display in the Museum have been dated to 100,000 BC, which means they were made and used by Neanderthal people. The coming of the railway in 1838 helped to change Wimbledon from a quiet hilltop village into the busy town it is today. These changes are illustrated in the Museum in photographs and charts. It's not just about tennis. With its open spaces and clean air, Wimbledon has for centuries been a wonderful place to live and many famous people have come here. (Not to mention the Prime Minister who came here to fight a duel!) If you like Wimbledon, as a resident or visitor, you'll enjoy it even more when you know something of its fascinating history. We'll be glad to welcome you to our place and show you the past.
