Artillery has been vital in every war the British Army has fought, and The Royal Regiment of Artillery, which is responsible for those guns, is one of the largest branches of the Army. The Regiment can trace its origins to the 15th Century, when the first professional group of artillerymen was formed at the Tower of London, and there were Gunners in the Arsenal by the 1660s. The Regiment itself was founded there in 1716 and still has its Headquarters in Woolwich. For over 250 years the Royal Arsenal was one of the world's most important centres of weapons and ammunition manufacture. Many of the guns and carriages on display in Firepower were made here.
