The home of the Royal Watercolour Society (founded 1804) and the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers
(founded 1880). Located on the South Bank of the Thames, adjacent to Tate Modern, Bankside Gallery aims to provide a pre-eminent showcase for works of art on paper, painted and printed by Members of both Societies. We run a changing programme of exhibitions of contemporary watercolours and original prints by Members of the two Societies. Members are elected by their peers in a tradition of excellence reaching back almost two hundred years. Their work embraces both established and experimental practices and the exhibitions reflect these different approaches. The Society has the proud distinction of being the first institution anywhere in the world to specialise in watercolours, and in its Victorian heyday it inspired similar organisations throughout Europe. Moreover as the first body of artists to both secede from the Royal Academy and establish an independent identity for itself, it set a precedent for many other societies. Although it has undergone various changes, the RWS continues today to fulfil much the same function it did almost two hundred years ago and, aside from the Academy itself, it can claim to be the oldest artistic body in Britain still functioning today. The Society of Painter-Etchers was founded in 1880 by Seymour Haden and five colleagues to seek recognition for artists working in etching, engraving and mezzotint. At that time the Royal Academy refused to recognise printmaking as a creative rather than reproductive art. In 1888 the Society was granted its Royal Charter. The Society further expanded to encompass engravers in 1898, becoming the Royal Society of Etcher-Engravers (RE) and in 1989 acknowledged advances in technology by becoming the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. The Society's major exhibition of Members' work is held at Bankside Gallery each year, normally in May but the Members participate in group exhibitions and mixed watercolour and print shows throughout the year.
