The Fashion and Textile Museum (FTM) represents the life long dream of founder, Zandra Rhodes. Located in one of the fashion capitals of the world, the mission of the Fashion and Textile Museum is to exhibit the immense changes in contemporary fashion and textiles and educate a wide audience in all areas of fashion and textile design. FTM is the first exhibition space in London solely dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the achievements of this global industry. Situated in the culturally thriving South Bank, FTM aims to hold two to three major exhibitions per year, manage an innovative education and outreach programme and host an extensive digital fashion and textile archive. Zandra Rhodes, born in Kent, was introduced to the world of fashion by her mother who was a fitter in a Paris fashion house and lecturer at Medway College of Art. Zandra studied at Medway College and subsequently at the Royal College of Art in London. Her major focus of study was textile design. Zandra Rhodes' early work was considered too daring by British manufacturers, but she established her own label in 1969, winning the Designer of the Year award, 1972 and in 1974, becoming a Royal Designer for Industry. Her very individual style brought her a wide private clientele who included members of the Royal family, and stars of stage and screen. In recognition of her contribution to fashion and textile design, she was made Commander of the British Empire in 1997. She continues to design for retail and private clients and has also designed for the stage. A forthcoming production is the Pearl Fishers for the San Diego Opera for whom in 2000 she designed the costumes for the Magic Flute opera. She remains an artist, creator and collector.
