Club Quarters, Gracechurch is a first class hotel, set in London's historic district, beside Leadenhall Hall market. The turn-of-the century building was originally the headquarters of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank.
It is thought that on or near the site of St Michael's stood the first Christian church in England (dating from AD 179). We know the names of the Rectors from the year 1055 and those of the Directors of Music since the sixteenth century: such people as William Boyce (the eighteenth-century composer and Master of the King's Music), Richard Limpus (who founded the [Royal] College of Organists here), Harold Darke (Who gave over 1,800 lunchtime organ recitals between 1916 and 1966), Richard Popplewell (now Organist, Choirmaster & Composer to Her Majesty's Chapels Royal) and, since 1979, Jonathan Rennert. Choral services (according to the 1662 Book of Common Prayer) take place on Sundays at 11.00 am (except during August). St Michael's is the venue for many memorial services, and for the services of several of the City of London Livery Companies. An organ recital is given every Monday at 1.00pm (except public holidays) in what is thought to be the longest-running series of recitals (it was founded in 1916).
